Brassed Off @ Altrincham Garrick
Theatre
ALTRINCHAM Garrick reverberates to the sound of the Glossop Old Band playing popular numbers such as the William Tell Overture and the Floral Dance until Saturday. They succeed in conveying the emotions in Paul Allen’s play, ‘Brassed Off’, through music. In the story, the band belongs to a pit which is threatened with closure and is fighting the Government by strike action in 1984.

Once A Catholic @ Altrincham Garrick

SCHOOLS in the fifties were much stricter than today, but Catholic girls’ schools were probably the toughest of the lot. The Garrick’s production of Mary O’Malley’s play, Once A Catholic, takes you to the heart of one of these institutions - The Convent of our Lady of Fatima, Grammar School for Girls. The Catholic teenagers would much rather think about Elvis and boys than learn their catechisms.

La Cage aux Folles @ Altrincham Garrick
Theatre
ALTRINCHAM Garrick Theatre brings down the curtain on its 75th season with an eighth sell-out production of 'La Cage aux Folles'. Based on Harvey Fierstein’s book and a score composed by Jerry Herman (of ‘Hello Dolly’) fame, the show was, when it opened more than 30 years ago, the first gay musical.

Comfort and Joy @ Altrincham Garrick

ANYONE in their right mind would condemn Mike Harding’s 1997 farce, Comfort and Joy as a load of piffle. But when you see this ridiculous Christmas comedy, you are not in your right mind because you laugh so much it sends you off kilter. This is thanks to the team work and timing of a top rate cast who present a sequence of chaotic incidents which disturb a Christmas gathering.

When We Are Married @ Altrincham Garrick

I HAVE never, as a journalist, come across a photographer who got drunk on duty. But who can blame Henry Ormonroyd for having one too many in this classic comedy at the Garrick Theatre. After all, he has to snap three anxious couples who, after 25 years together, discover they are not legally married!

Lady Windermere’s Fan @ Altrincham Garrick Theatre
Theatre
LADY Windermere's Fan, Oscar Wildeés classic play at the Garrick is not helped by an ill-judged shift of set and dress from Wildeés day, to the 1930s, when speech was more casual and less fluid.

EVEN the happiest of families have moment of discord. But the one featured in Bill Macllwraithés comedy, The Anniversary, at Altrincham Garrick, has suffered years of strife.

AMATEUR theatre can, sometimes, come up with a show that is equal to anything you would see in the large, Manchester theatres.
