A cordon is in place in Sale town centre this morning after bomb disposal experts were scrambled to a ATM 'explosion'.

Emergency services were called to the attempted robbery at a premises on Hereford Street at around 2.50am this morning (Monday). Police believe the suspects used an 'explosive device' to try and steal from a cash machine.

Police, fire crews and bomb disposal experts rushed to the scene and a cordon was in put in place. No injuries were reported and no arrests have been made.

This morning, a number of streets are reportedly cordoned off around the town centre, including Hereford Street and Springfield Road. Police said the closure is likely to remain in the place throughout the morning, with businesses in the area impacted.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "At around 2:50am this morning (Monday 20 November) Greater Manchester Police were called to reports of an attempted robbery at a premises on Hereford Street, Sale. It’s believed that the suspects used an explosive device to gain access to a cash machine.

"Colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) also attended the scene, thankfully no injuries were reported. A scene remains in place which is likely to impact local businesses and travel in the area for the duration of the morning.

"No arrests have been made at this stage but police are following a number of lines of enquiry."

Springfield Primary School open as normal

Springfield Primary School is open as normal this morning this morning, according to a message sent to parents seen by the M.E.N.

The school is on Springfield Road, which has reportedly been reopened.
