Police cordons are in place and roads are closed after emergency services responded to a serious incident.
Investigations are focused on a stretch of Rochdale Road in the Firgrove area of Rochdale.
A badly damaged, liveried Greater Manchester Police car has been photographed within a cordon, and police remain at the scene today.

According to reports, the area around Kingsway was also closed on Sunday morning, from Albert Royd Street.
Reports on social media suggest part of the nearby canal has also been cordoned off by police.
The nature of the incident as yet remains unclear, but unconfirmed reports suggest a road traffic collision.
The Manchester Evening News has approached Greater Manchester Police for further comment.

Injured pedestrian confirmed as a man
GMP has confirmed the injured pedestrian is a man, but no age for him has been released.
Referral made to police watchdog
GMP added:
In-line with normal procedure, referrals have been made to GMP’s Professional Standards Directorate and the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
No further details have been revealed.

In a statement, GMP said:
Around 3.25am on Sunday 19 November 2023, officers in a police vehicle requested a vehicle to stop in Rochdale.
The driver failed to stop and a short police pursuit commenced on Milnrow Road and continued onto Rochdale Road where a collision occurred between the police vehicle and a pedestrian.
The vehicle failed to stop at the scene of the collision. Officers provided medical assistance to the injured pedestrian, who was taken to Salford Royal Hospital where they remain in a critical condition.
A scene has been established and enquiries are ongoing to locate the male driver who made off.
