Castleton
Castleton is a former mill town and part of Rochdale borough. Historically it was also part of the ancient parish of Rochdale. Castleton was named in the Domesday Book and was the site of Rochdale Castle. It grew rapidly with the arrival of the Rochdale Canal. Before the canal it was known as Blue Pits Village. In the 19th century Castleton's growth was so fast it rivalled Rochdale in size.
