Manchester’s Christmas Markets have been ranked as the second best in the UK according to a new study. The city was pipped to the post by Birmingham, but managed to beat the likes of Edinburgh, York and London in the list.
The research did show that Manchester’s markets had the highest number of TikTok tags, at 13.1m. It also amassed the most annual Google searches, with a whopping 722,300.
However in terms of Instagram mentions, Manchester’s 8,400 was dwarfed by Birmingham's figure - 20,300 mentions. Manchester’s market also has a shorter run than its Brummy cousin, and an average nightly four-star hotel stay costs you more here, at £148 per night (compared to Birmingham’s £116).

But Manchester did come out as one of the most affordable Christmas market destinations if you’re looking at a three-star hotel, with a night costing you on average £96. The new study, by Christmas Tree World, gave Manchester an overall score of 7.69 out of 10, across six different categories.
Birmingham achieved a score of 8.59, while Nottingham came third with a score of 6.67. Manchester has actually dropped down the rankings, after it was named the best in last year’s study.
Manchester scored so highly in the study due sheer number of Google searches for the event. The study authors wrote: “The market placed first overall in last year’s study, but just falls short of retaining the title of ‘the best’ this year!
“The city, however, recorded the highest number of annual Google searches for its Christmas market (722,300) and the highest volume of TikTok views (13.1 million). Thanks to its vast range of activities and restaurants, it is a perfect destination for families with children, and runs for a total of 42 days!”
