A huge emergency services response was scrambled to the street after the explosion, including police officers, firefighters, paramedics and the air ambulance. Neighbours in at least a dozen properties were evacuated, with some not able to return home until the following afternoon.
Police said at the time a joint investigation into the 'circumstances of the incident' was ongoing, however 'this is being delayed due to the structural damage to the property'. There is no risk to the community and all utilities have been made safe.
In an updated statement, Derbyshire Police said a further review of the scene would start on Monday.
The force said: "A man has died following an explosion at a house in New Mills.
"Emergency services were called to Ollersett Avenue just after 8am on Tuesday 14 November to reports of an explosion. Seventy-eight-year-old Nigel Barrow suffered life-threatening injuries during the incident and was taken to hospital where he died yesterday.
"His family are aware and are being supported by officers.
"An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the explosion, however, due to the damage caused to the property this has yet to be completed. A further review of the scene will take place early next week.
No further details have been revealed and there's been no reports of any further injuries.
Eyewitnesses described how they woke to the street 'shaking' after the explosion.
Those living on the street said the explosion 'just missed' a number of children walking to the nearby school. "It could’ve been a lot worse," one commented.
