A plan to convert the upper floors of a building in Altrincham town centre into a complex of five apartments has been submitted. The accommodation on the upper floors of the office building on George Street will be augmented by the building of second and third-floor extensions and dormer windows to the front and rear.
The Applicant is 21 Living Ltd, and the property is in the heart of the town’s busy shopping area. It comprises of a shop floor at street level with staff facilities to the rear with the retail entrance directly off George Street, while the staff access is from Brewery Street to the rear of the building.
The shop is a separate entity of this building and, therefore, does not form part of the application. The existing offices to the upper floors is currently accessed via both George Street and Brewery Street.

The offices will be converted into residential units (including the conversion of the existing roof space) with shared facilities at street level to the rear. This will include remote bin stores and a bike store for the residents.
Three larger two-bedroom apartments will face both George Street and Brewery Street, while two one-bed flats will face only Brewery Street. A design and access statement from The Design Room Architecture & Interiors says that the address at in the pedestrianised zone of George Street is a short walk from Altrincham Transport Interchange.
“The only impact, in terms of appearance, is changes to the elevation facing Brewery Street,” it says. “The new accommodation will be in brick to match the existing [building].
“The property is within the George Street Conservatiuon Area. All new windows will be timber and painted white.” There will be no parking spaces provided as part of the scheme, although there is a 'pay as you go' site at both Stamford Quarter Car Park and Goose Green Car Park, a short walk from the property.
All the properties will be accessed via a shared shared stairway - externally and internally - and would be spread over three floors.
