Conrad London St James hotel smells amazing.
That might seem a strange opener for a travel review - but it’s the first thing you notice about this gorgeous place.
Entering through the 19th century facade, follow your nose through the sumptuous lobby to Emmeline's Lounge. Named after Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, it's a cosy, elegant spot to enjoy afternoon tea with champagne, a cocktail or a selection of teas from around the world.
To the left there’s the Blue Boar Bar and Restaurant, where I’m told you can often find an MP or two enjoying some refreshment in between debates.
There’s even a bell to summon them back to the houses of parliament - which are so close, they could forget the bell and just get someone to shout over.
As well as the a la carte menu, the restaurant offers a private dining room for parties and events; a private drinking room; bar food and, with Christmas coming up, an extensive list of festive options.
The rich scent in the air gives you a good idea what to expect from the rooms.
There’s nothing like a good hotel bed to put you in the lap of luxury - and this is among the best I’ve ever slept in. It’s like floating on a cloud. Quality products are provided and, having just moved house, I’m picking up decorating tips to replicate in my new bathroom.
Wifi and a Nespresso machine in every room are complimentary, and executive-floor guests can enjoy breakfast in the executive lounge included in their stay.
As mentioned earlier the Houses of Parliament are a stone’s throw away, which means Westminster Abbey, Downing Street and Buckingham palace are too if you’re here to take in the historic seats of British power.
If you’re here for the shops and nightlife the hotel is perfectly placed with Leicester Square less than a mile away and Oxford Circus at just under a mile and a half. St James’s Park underground station is just across the road, placing you just 20 minutes from Kings Cross station.
The hotel is perfectly placed to enjoy the best of what London has to offer - but you could have just as good a visit without stepping outside.
